Herbs and spices not only impart great flavor to dishes but provide nutrients and outside of the occasional food allergy, have no side effects.

Turmeric, for example, is a root herb that looks like ginger root.  It is a common ingredient found in most curries and it is what turns curry powder the golden orange color.

The medicinal component to this herb is curcumin.
A powerhouse nutrient!

It is a natural antiviral, anti microbial, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory, it heals wounds....and that's just for starters.

One rounded measuring teaspoon per day is the recommended adult dosage.

A friend of mine from India told me once that he and his wife used to add a teaspoon of turmeric to their childrens' water every morning and they never got colds.

Because it heals wounds I keep it in my spice kit when I'm cheffing because if I cut my finger I just apply some turmeric to the wound, slap a band aid on it and keep working.

Herbs and Spices...Nature's Medicine!

It's cold and flu season so try my version of the below recipe.

Compliments of Eclectic Personal Chef, LLC
Adapted from the internet and revised

¾ cup water + ½ cup coconut milk(original recipe)
1 ¼ cups coconut milk(my take, personally I like this better)
1 rounded teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger(no need to peel)
½ star anise(this is my addition, great for digestion)
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract(my addition, optional)
Honey to taste
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper(you don’t taste this but it is needed for absorption of curcumin)

Whisk together then heat, strain, pour into a cup and sip.  Warm and soothing, this beverage is great before bedtime.

Make this in batches of the dry ingredients and keep on the shelf in a glass jar, then shake to incorporate ingredients before measuring out into the milk.

In this case, when preparing this method for 1 person, 2 measuring teaspoons of the dry ground spices is the portion to use.

Sylvia Anton with The Holistic Garden has been coaching me for a year about adequate supplementation to my meal plan.

After assessing my current health, during a Health History Assessment, recommendations were made to assist me in providing the most effective solution(s) while taking into consideration my lifestyle and what comfortably fits into my schedule so that I can continue to commit the progression of my own health to myself.

Over the past year this is the only change I have made so there is no doubt in my mind, my improved blood work is due to the supplements Sylvia has recommended along with her careful guidance.

Thank you, Sylvia, for your Health Coaching, guidance and care.
